Applications open for Klarman fellowships

Applications are being accepted for the second cohort of Klarman Postdoctoral Fellows in the College of Arts & Sciences.

The three-year fellowships are available to early-career scholars conducting leading-edge research in any of the College’s discipline areas. The program is among the most selective of its kind in the country, offering independence from constraints of particular grants and enabling the recipients to devote themselves to frontline, innovative research without being tied to specific outcomes or teaching responsibilities.

The Fellowships confer generous salaries, benefits and research support, in addition to opportunities for professional development and enrichment. Klarman Fellows will meet regularly during the academic year and participate in an annual symposium.

Each fellow is hosted by a faculty member during their entire fellowship period.

In its inaugural cycle last year, more than 260 candidates submitted applications for the program, with six scholars selected for the first cohort. Their research topics range from the governance of artificial intelligence and interpreting gravitational waves produced by merging black holes, to meritocracy in Silicon Valley and logic studies linking analytic philosophy with mathematics.

“Our inaugural group of Klarman Fellows is already at work on projects that will lead to discoveries and impacts we can only imagine,” said Ray Jayawardhana, the Harold Tanner Dean of Arts and Sciences, who led the program’s conception and launch. “We look forward to selecting a new cohort to benefit from and contribute to the radically collaborative research environment in the College and across Cornell.”

The Fellowships are made possible by Seth Klarman, a 1979 graduate of the College of Arts & Sciences, and Beth Schultz Klarman. Seth Klarman is CEO of the Boston-based Baupost Group, LLC, and Beth Klarman is president of The Klarman Family Foundation.
