Career Development Resources for Alumni

Get Involved

The mission of Arts & Sciences Career Development is to connect students to their futures, help them explore career paths, participate in research and internships, and gain the skills necessary to succeed at Cornell and beyond. Counselors work with students from their first year onward and also provide help to young alumni navigating their career trajectory.

We are excited to invite you to be part of achieving this mission. We hope you will take the time to peruse the variety of ways to get involved with A&S Career Development.

A&S Career Connections Committee

The Arts & Sciences Career Connections Committee (ASCCC) was established in 2010 to assist with enhancing alumni-student connections within the College. Best practices suggest that the most effective way for students to progress in their career development is through exposure to possible career fields. Alumni can play an integral role in both exposing students to careers and providing expertise on entering specific career fields. The ASCCC is a meaningful volunteer opportunity for Arts & Sciences alumni and parents of current Arts & Sciences students to provide career advice to current Arts & Sciences students.

What are Field Teams?

Field Teams are designed to provide a network of A&S alumni and parents in fields of interest to A&S students. Field Teams include: Finance, Law, Media, Government & Policy, and Healthcare. These teams organize activities that engage A&S students with A&S alumni and A&S parents in the field to learn about careers. Each field team also assists current undergraduate students as they begin to build their own Cornell network with A&S alumni.

For more information about the A&S Career Connections Committee or to nominate yourself for a Field Team, access CU Volunteer. Search "Arts & Sciences" to see available opportunities.

Career Conversations and Office Hours

What is a Career Conversation?

This is an opportunity for alumni and friends to offer career advice to a small group of Arts and Sciences undergraduates. These events are meant to be small networking sessions designed to offer 5-15 students the chance to get answers to their most pressing questions about a particular career field. Typically, these events take place on Fridays, but we are more than happy to accommodate your schedule. All that is expected is an hour of your time on campus (or virtually via ZOOM!) and an interest in engaging in a conversation with students about your career. We recommend speaking for about 10-15 minutes about your career and then inviting the students to ask questions.

What are Office Hours?

Alumni, parents, recruiters, and friends are invited to participate in a program that will connect you one-on-one with students to provide career insight and guidance, including resume and cover letter reviews. Volunteer for a morning, afternoon, or a full-day of office hours, and we will have students register for 15-20 minute appointments. First year students through seniors will be invited to participate unless you request otherwise. Some will be exploring career options and simply want to know more about your line of work, while others will be interested in learning how to leverage their skills and talents into a career in your field.

Share Job and Internship Postings

Is your organization hiring for full-time or internships and interested in hiring Cornell students (undergrad, grad, and/or alumni)? If so, we encourage you (or your HR/hiring manager) to post the position to Handshake, our jobs/internships database. Cornell uses the Handshake system to post internships and salary-based positions for current students and alumni with 0-5 years of work experience that also require a bachelor’s degree or higher level of education.

To join an existing employer account, or to establish a new account, go to https://cornell.joinhandshake.com, select “Sign up for an account”, and follow prompts for employers. Please do not use the create a new account option if your organization already has an account; instead, join the existing account. You will be asked to respond to a few basic questions and then to confirm your email address. We will review and approve the request to link to Cornell and send you tinstructions on posting positions. Note that communications are sent from Handshake and often go into spam or junk folders; to prevent that, you can add the following email to your contacts: handshake@notifications.joinhandshake.com. Job postings are free of charge at Cornell.

For assistance on how to post jobs once your request is approved, see Handshake's resource page or contact our office.

Meaningful Ways to Give

DONATE TO ARTS & SCIENCES CAREER DEVELOPMENT

Help Arts & Sciences Career Development fulfill our mission to connect students to their futures. At Cornell, we want students to excel both inside and outside of the classroom. By investing in Career Development, you allow them to explore career paths, participate in research and internships, and gain the skills necessary to succeed at Cornell and beyond.

SUMMER EXPERIENCE GRANT

The Summer Experience Grant aids students to complete unpaid or minimally paid career-related experiences. It helps students who would not be able to take on a summer career-related experience or would have a difficult time doing so. Students can gain valuable skills via opportunities at research labs, governmental organizations, non-profits, media and communication firms, or wherever their career interests take them. Grants can help students to pay for the cost of living expenses incurred by accepting the internship, as well as help them with their financial aid.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR’S DISCRETIONARY FUND

The Career Development Director’s Discretionary Fund provides innovative initiatives that enhance career development for students, adding an inventive career workshop, or expanding the availability and breadth of counseling appointments. Your gift will enable Career Development to seek out the newest and best ways to serve Arts & Sciences students with their career exploration.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUND

The Professional Development Fund provides resources to support or supplement the career development needs of undergraduate students with financial need. Often these “hidden costs” prohibit students from realizing their career goals. Funding is available for travel to interviews, conference attendance, graduate school test preparation fees, graduate school application fees, professional attire, and networking event attendance.

Young Alumni Career Services
