Three Nobel Laureates to speak on campus this semester

This fall, the Cornell community has the chance to hear from three Nobel Laureates in one semester, two of whom are alumni: Claudia Goldin ’67, Jack Szostak, Ph.D. ’77, and Richard Thaler.

“We’re excited to welcome three such illustrious researchers to Cornell,” said Peter John Loewen, the Harold Tanner Dean of Arts and Sciences. “Two had their academic birth at Cornell, while Dr. Thaler began his Nobel Prize winning work here in behavioral economics, still one of the College’s great strengths. I hope many students and faculty will take advantage of the opportunity to hear from these innovative leaders in their fields.”

Goldin will give the fall 2025 Staller Lecture on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 4:30 p.m. in Schwartz Auditorium, Rockefeller Hall. Goldin, a Harvard University faculty member and winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics, is best known for her historical work on women in the U.S. economy. Her lecture is titled, “Why Women Won” and is hosted by the Department of Economics in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Szostak will give the fall 2025 Racker Lecture on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 pm in Rm. G10, Biotechnology Building. Szostak, a University of Chicago faculty member and winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, is known for his significant contributions to genetics. His lecture is titled “The Origin of Life and the Nature of the First Cells” and is hosted by the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, a joint department of A&S and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Thaler will speak on Friday, Oct. 17 at 4:00 pm in the Rhodes-Rawlings Auditorium, Klarman Hall. Thaler, a former faculty member of the SC Johnson College of Business and winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Economics for work done during his time at Cornell, is known as the founder of behavioral economics. His event, “A Conversation with Richard Thaler,” will be a dialogue with Thomas Gilovich, the Irene Blecker Rosenfeld Professor of Psychology (A&S) and is hosted by A&S and the College of Business.
