Since arriving in Washington with a promise to “drain the swamp,” President Donald Trump has often called out the “deep state” for blocking his political goals. The fourth event in the Democracy 20/20 webinar series will examine how the capacity and professionalism of the federal government has fared over the past four years.
The webinar, "Destroying or Deploying the 'Deep State,'” will be held Sept. 18 from 2-3:15 p.m. The virtual event is open to the public; registration is required.
The session’s panelists include:
• Jamila Michener, associate professor of government in the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) and the author of “Fragmented Democracy: Medicaid, Federalism, and Unequal Politics” (2018);
• Daniel Carpenter, the Allie S. Freed Professor of Government at Harvard University. He is the author of “Reputation and Power: Organizational Image and Pharmaceutical Regulation at the FDA” (2010); and
• Donald Moynihan, chair of the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University and visiting professor at the University of Oxford and at Aarhus University. He is the author of “Administrative Burden: Policymaking by Other Means” (2018).
Suzanne Mettler, the John L. Senior Professor of American Institutions in the Department of Government in A&S, will serve as moderator.
