The Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy and the College of Arts and Sciences are collaborating to launch a new option for bachelor of arts students admitted through A&S to major in public policy.
The initiative follows the long-standing, successful approach that allows A&S students to major in computer science or information science in the Cornell Bowers College of Computing and Information Science.
“We are thrilled to partner with our colleagues in A&S to allow more Cornell undergraduate students to pursue public policy studies,” said Brooks Dean Colleen Barry. “Through this collaboration, an undergraduate can enter Cornell undecided about their major and discover that they have a passion for the field of public policy.”
Students who decide to pursue the B.A. in public policy will be admitted into the College of Arts and Sciences and take courses in both Brooks and A&S.
“Public policy adds to the social sciences represented within the College of Arts and Sciences, including government, economics, sociology and science and technology studies. Enabling our A&S students to pursue a depth of study in public policy will further enhance and complement their broad liberal arts education,” said Peter Loewen, the Harold Tanner Dean of Arts and Sciences. “As someone who comes from a public policy background, I am particularly overjoyed to be working with Brooks to expand opportunities for A&S students to explore this new major.”
The Brooks public policy major integrates the disciplines of economics, political science, sociology, demography, communication, statistics and law with engaged learning experiences that teach students to effectively analyze and develop public policy with the aim of improving the world. Brooks faculty apply a global, multidisciplinary, and solution-oriented focus to a broad set of public policy issues in the school’s seven areas of focus: data science and technology policy; environmental and sustainability policy; health policy; human security; the politics and economics of development; race, racism and public policy; and social policy and inequality.
Students in the B.A. in public policy will receive advising and student support services from both Brooks and A&S and will be considered graduates of both units, their degrees signed by both deans.
