ACT collaboration Part of the new image of the cosmic microwave background from ACT, that adds to Planck satellite measurements, showing the light’s vibration direction overlaid. These black polarization ‘sticks’ are used to work out how much radial-type (blue) or tangential-type (red) polarization there is around any place in the sky. This lets the team make a new image that reveals the velocity of the primordial plasma, with the blue radial-pattern showing where gas clumps are getting pulled inwards by gravity.
