'You are exactly where you need to be'

Why did you choose Cornell?

I chose Cornell University because I wanted to challenge myself in a new environment while expanding my perspective. Coming from a small town, I was excited by the opportunity to explore new interests, meet people with backgrounds and stories different than my own and step outside my comfort zone. Cornell stood out for its rigorous academics and incredible range of opportunities, but also for the strong mentorship and support resources that make it possible to grow intellectually and personally.

What is your main extracurricular activity and why is it important to you?

One of my main extracurricular activities on campus is my involvement as an ambassador for the College of Arts & Sciences. Serving as an ambassador has truly been one of the most meaningful experiences during my time at Cornell. I have loved spending time connecting with prospective and admitted students (and their families) by answering their questions, easing their worries and helping them feel more comfortable in their transition to college. I have also had the opportunity to mentor students over the summer and during orientation, which has also been a rewarding experience. Being able to serve in a mentor role means a lot to me because I remember how valuable guidance and reassurance were when I was navigating the transition to Cornell as a first-year student. I have enjoyed getting to give back and help others feel supported as they navigate that same transition.

What have you accomplished as a Cornell student that you are most proud of?

One of the things that I am most proud of from my time as a Cornell student is the growth that I have made in learning how to balance everything around me – especially in such a busy environment. Coming in as a first-year, I approached everything with a very "go-go-go" mindset, and felt like I always had to be studying or doing other productive things, sometimes even at the expense of other experiences. Over time, that perspective shifted. I have learned that making time for myself, relationships and community is just as important as academic success. This shift has made me more intentional in how I spend my time, and it has helped me develop habits and priorities that I will carry into whatever I pursue next.

Who or what influenced your Cornell education the most?

The biggest influence on my Cornell education has been my family. As a first-generation college student, their support has meant everything to me. I always say that my family has been my biggest cheerleaders, and I mean that truly. They have been a constant source of motivation for me, pushing me to always be the best version of myself. Knowing that I have people who are always in my corner, celebrating the wins and helping me through the difficult moments, has made a huge difference in how I’ve navigated my experience.

If you were to offer advice to an incoming first-year student, what would you say?

Focus on your own path! It's easy to compare yourself to others, especially in a place like Cornell, but everyone is navigating their own journey at their own pace. Trust that where you are is exactly where you need to be.

Give yourself the space to find balance! It's easy to feel like you always have to be working or keeping up, but it's okay to take breaks. In fact, it's healthy. Some of the most influential parts of your experience will come from moments outside of academics (building relationships, trying new things, etc.).

Lean on the people around you. Whether it's friends, mentors, or support systems on campus, you are not here alone.
