Share and hear poetry in many languages at this April 9 event

The Language Resource Center (LRC) will host its third annual “Sweet Poetry” event April 9, featuring live poetry read in multiple languages. You can sign up to read a poem at the event by filling out this participation form by Friday, March 28.

"Poetry is an important form of expression as it carries the histories, dreams and voices of a culture,” said Angelika Kraemer, LRC director. “Though we may speak in different tongues, the words unite us, serving as a reminder that language is a bridge to community and shared humanity.”

The event, which begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Groos Family Atrium of Klarman Hall, will include sweet treats and original poetry, as well as works from established poets. Audience members can also consult a digital event booklet, which includes transcriptions of each poem along with approximate English translations.

"Sweet Poetry is a unique event that brings members of the Cornell community together to celebrate the beauty of art and diversity of languages,” said Ashley Griffith, LRC engagement and outreach coordinator. “We hope this event gives a platform for readers to share a work of poetry they appreciate in a language they love, and an opportunity for attendees to engage with the many languages spoken on campus."

The event, which celebrates April as National Poetry Month, is co-sponsored by the Departments of Asian Studies, Linguistics, German Studies and Romance Studies. Listen to a podcast episode recapping the 2024 event.
