The Cornell Department of Music welcomes internationally acclaimed soprano Martha Guth and legendary pianist-scholar Graham Johnson to campus for events on January 29 and 30.
On Thursday, Jan. 29 at 6:30 p.m. in Barnes Hall, the Cornell Voice Program and the Cornell Center for Historical Keyboards present Salon Solèy, a performance and conversation series, featuring Graham Johnson. The evening brings together student performances with Johnson’s interpretive guidance and historical perspective to explore nineteenth-century German Lieder and the evolving relationship between voice and piano, from the fortepiano to the modern instrument.
Then on Friday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Barnes Hall, Guth and Johnson present “All About Eve,” a recital exploring musical visions of womanhood in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The program features Gabriel Fauré’s “La Chanson d’Eve” (1906), a defining work of the composer’s late style, followed by songs by Franz Schubert portraying women shaped by love, fate, and loss. Together, Guth and Johnson bring a shared depth of insight and artistry to a program shaped by myth and psychology.
Graham Johnson is recognized as one of the world’s leading vocal accompanists, studying at the Royal Academy of Music, London.
He devises and accompanies concerts regularly at Wigmore Hall from the re-opening series in 1992 and in its centenary celebrations in 2001. He is Senior Professor of Accompaniment at the Guildhall School of Music and has led a biennial scheme for Young Songmakers since 1985. Among his many honors, Johnson was made an OBE (1994), created Chevalier in the Ordre des Arts et Lettres (2002), Honorary Member of the Royal Philharmonic Society (2010), and awarded the Wigmore Hall Medal (2013).
Juno nominated soprano Martha Guth's concert schedule has included performances at Wigmore Hall, Lincoln Center, The National Cathedral, Ravinia, Oxford International Song Festival, Chamber Fest (Ottawa), and Leeds Lieder, along with many orchestral and operatic engagements. Her career in song was launched after winning first prize at both the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition and the Concours Musical International de Montréal. Martha is Associate Professor of Voice at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.
