New Faculty: Benjamin Dozier

Benjamin Dozier

Assistant Professor, Mathematics

Academic focus:
Dynamical systems, Riemann surfaces

Current research project:
I study translation surfaces and Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces. Translation surfaces can be used to understand the dynamics of a billiard ball bouncing around on a polygonal billiard table. A central theme in my work is the rich interplay between concrete problems concerning dynamics on individual surfaces and more abstract questions about moduli spaces.

Previous positions:

  • Simons Instructor, Mathematics, Stony Brook University, 2019-2021

Academic background:

  • Ph.D., Mathematics, Stanford University, 2018
  • A.B., Mathematics, secondary in computer science, Harvard University, 2012

Last book read:
“The Spy and the Traitor” by Ben MacIntyre

In your own time/when not working:
I like reading and dabbling in outdoor pursuits (hiking, climbing, biking, backpacking, skiing, fishing---also looking to get into some water activities to enjoy the lakes around here)

Courses you’re most looking forward to teaching:
Measure Theory and Lebesgue Integration, a graduate course, this fall.  I'm also excited to teach undergraduates whom I can convince of the beauty of math.

What most excites you about Cornell:
The talent, diversity of interests and backgrounds, and the collaborative and friendly vibe
