What are the most valuable skills you gained from your Arts & Sciences education?
I believe one valuable skill I gained was the interdisciplinary perspective that extended beyond my majors. While my background lies in technical subjects, the humanities provided me with the ability to consider different stakeholder viewpoints and arrive at more nuanced problem-solving approaches. This was particularly beneficial when researching the environmental and social impacts of material production, as I realized that not all challenges can be addressed with algorithms alone.
What have you accomplished as a Cornell student that you are most proud of?
During my time at Cornell, I had the privilege of working with the COMPASSE research group (led by Alexander Hayes, the Jennifer and Albert Sohn Professor of Astronomy). One of my key contributions was calibrating a pair of cameras aboard the Perseverance rover. While the improvement I made might have been a small fraction, I still take immense pride and am thankful for being part of such an important project.
How have your beliefs or perspectives changed since you first arrived at Cornell?
I've come to realize that there is nothing to fear in seeking help. Recognizing my own limitations has allowed me to embrace assistance from others, which has not only expanded my knowledge but also helped me grow and improve.
Who or what influenced your Cornell education the most?
Working at the J2 Lab (of Assistant Professor Jingjie Yeo in Engineering) has been the most influential part of my Cornell education. It has allowed me to delve into diverse projects, from modeling the environmental impacts of materials to simulating bacteria. These small-scale projects have often taught me more than my classes, giving me the chance to go beyond textbook learning. Additionally, the strong culture of mutual support within the group has made it feel less like a lab and more like a family.
