These black polarization ‘sticks’ are used to work out how much radial-type (blue) or tangential-type (red) polarization there is around any place in the sky. This lets the team make a new image that reveals the velocity of the primordial plasma, with the blue radial-pattern showing where gas clumps are getting pulled inwards by gravity.
