New Faculty: Ryan Chahrour

Ryan Chahrour

Associate Professor, Economics

Academic focus:

Macroeconomics, monetary economics, and theories of incomplete information

Current research project:

A current research project explores how changes in financial markets’ appetite for risk can drive classical business cycles.  We show that the data support the idea that reduced risk appetite of investors and firms leads to a reallocation of investment to safer, but also less productive assets. This can cause a recession, with high unemployment, even when there is no deeper reason for the economy to perform poorly.

What most excites you about Cornell:

I am most excited about getting to know the excellent and extremely broad faculty, both in the economics department and outside. I can’t wait to explore new intellectual horizons and to discover what collaborations emerge, even if I don’t know yet exactly what they will look like.
