New Faculty: Jonathan “Jon" Kephart

Jonathan “Jon" Kephart

Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology

Academic Focus:

Inorganic and organometallic chemistry

Current research project:

The Kephart Lab harnesses techniques from synthetic and physical inorganic chemistry and electrochemistry to unearth molecular-level insights into the coordinative processes involved in the structural evolution and interfacial reactivity of solid-state materials. In doing so, we aim to develop new quantum-confined phases of Earth abundant materials with emergent physicochemical properties for next-generation electronic applications, novel separations methods for refinement of precious metals, and designer molecular catalysts for small molecule activation and energy conversion schemes.

Previous positions:

  • MIT Energy Initiative Postdoctoral Scholar, Department of Chemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2023-2025

Academic Background:

  • Ph.D., Chemistry, University of Washington, 2023
  • B.S., Chemistry, University of Wyoming, 2017

Last Book Read:

“Cat’s Cradle” by Kurt Vonnegut

In my own time:

I enjoy running, rock climbing, playing acoustic guitar and hanging out with my daughter, Bernie.

Courses I’m most looking forward to teaching:

I sincerely look forward to teaching Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (CHEM 6050) this Fall, and look forward to teaching undergraduate Inorganic Chemistry and perhaps even General Chemistry in the future.

What most excites me about Cornell:

There are many, many things to be excited about here, but the #1 spot has to go to my colleagues. Thus far, I’ve found the faculty and staff in my department to be exceptional across the board. I’ve also been very impressed with the department’s facilities, and this campus is absolutely beautiful.
