Azahara Oliva

Assistant Professor, Neurobiology and Behavior

Academic focus:
Learning and memory, social behaviors, brain states, sleep

Current research project:
Our laboratory aims to understand how global brain dynamics modulate the local activity in different regions during learning, memory and sleep. We use electrophysiology and cell-type specific manipulations in rodents to decipher the brain mechanisms involved in this process. We are particularly interested in social behaviors, as it requires a particular motivational state for the animal to interact and remember other conspecifics, and sleep, which is a physiological and brain state during which memories are consolidated.

Previous positions:

  • Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Columbia University, Zuckerman Institute, 2017-2021

Academic background:

  • Ph.D., Neuroscience, University of Szeged, Hungary, 2016
  • M.Sc., Biomedical Physics, Complutense University, Spain, 2011
  • B.Sc., Physics, Complutense University, Spain, 2009

Last book read:
“Styles of Radical Will” by Susan Sontag

In your own time/when not working:
Reading, listening to music, playing with my dog

Courses you’re most looking forward to teaching:
Brain dynamics during social behaviors

What most excites you about Cornell:
The community and the diversity of the different fields of study at the university, certainly something that encourages you to think outside the box
