Music department partners with student groups for Slope Day competition

The music department in the College of Arts & Sciences has joined with student groups Jazz+, Just About Music (JAM), the Cornell Concert Commission (CCC) and the Slope Day Board to create the inaugural edition of the Big Red Idol competition.

Big Red Idol is a multi-phase “Battle of the Bands” competition in which student groups will audition and participate in a live competition, judged by the Cornell student body. The winner(s) of the live competition will perform at Slope Day.

Audition videos are due to the organizing board by midnight Dec. 19 and can be submitted here. The groups must have at least two members and more than half of their performing members must be full-time Cornell students. (Professors and members of the Ithaca College community do not count toward this total.) Videos must include a live, uncut performance no longer than 10 minutes containing at least two songs. “Original songs are encouraged, but not required,” said Marcos Eizayaga ‘23, a member of Jazz+.

Four to eight winners will be announced on Jan. 24 and will perform in a March 12 Bailey Hall concert, which will be immediately followed by a vote open to the entire Cornell community to determine the Slope Day performers.

More detailed information regarding the competition can be found on the Big Red Idol website.

Edit Jan. 30, 2022: Big Red Idol has announced that their new deadline for submissions is February 11.
