Alumnus recognized as one of Chemical and Engineering News “Talented 12” young chemists

Cathy Mulzer Ph.D ‘15 was honored last month as one of Chemical and Engineering News “Talented 12” honorees for 2019. The award recognizes the brightest young chemists “pushing the boundaries in their fields.”

The magazine, published by the American Chemical Society, selected this fourth installment of the Talented 12 from an original list of 350 nominations culled from reader submissions, staff advice and Talented 12 alumni. This year’s class of 12 has published 353 peer-review papers, filed 13 patents and speaks 9 different languages.

“It was such an honor to be named one of the Talented 12 by C&EN,” Mulzer said. “This award really speaks to the cutting-edge and collaborative environment at Cornell. It was a privilege to work together with the Dichtel and Abruña groups in the chemistry department.”

While at Cornell, Mulzer worked in former associate professor William Dichtel's group investigating a new class of materials known as covalent organic frameworks (COFs) that are attractive for gas storage and separation.

“Introducing COFs to the electrochemical energy storage field required us to draw upon the existing expertise of organic chemistry, polymer science and electrochemistry,” she said. “Cornell was the perfect center to carry out this work, which ultimately allowed us to invent and then improve redox-active COFs to the point of device fabrication.”

Her work with COFs at Cornell helped her secure a job with Dow Chemical in June 2016, she said, where she has continued to work on developing stronger polymer materials as a senior chemist.
