Alumni offer advice to A&S students at summer networking events

Students in the College of Arts & Sciences will have the opportunity to meet and network with alumni in a diverse array of career fields at a series of networking events this summer.

The college’s Career Development Center and the Arts & Sciences Career Connections Committee have planned five events in New York City and Washington D.C. beginning June 19.

“I wanted to see the paths that Cornell Arts &Sciences alums had chosen to pursue and inquire about the lessons they learned along their journeys,” said Carlee Moses, who attended summer events in media, law and policy last year.

Events feature Cornell alumni in the fields of media, healthcare, finance, government, policy and law who are at various points in their careers, from recent graduates to seasoned veterans.

"The events are a great way to network with alumni, explore career fields, get advice from professionals and gain some helpful contacts for job and internship searches," said Jen Maclaughlin, director of the Arts & Sciences Career Development Center. Alumni can also offer advice on graduate study, including the medical and law school admission processes, she said.

“As a rising senior, I strongly encourage other students to do so because it's a wonderful opportunity to gain career advice from Cornelians who are not only in the field of interest to you, but also are super successful,” said Olivia Goldring ’18, who attended a law event last summer. “I was able to get a lot of contact information from the event I attended last year, and have remained in contact with some of the attendees.”

Event locations include the Cornell Weill Medical Center and the offices of YouTube and Morgan Stanley.

"Students can look forward to hearing from media executives working in television, publishing, news, music and tech,” said Jennifer Towle ‘93, Global Clearance Specialist for YouTube Spaces and Google Legal and a member of the Career Connections Committee. “Alumni will introduce themselves and be available to speak one on one. This is a great opportunity for students to ask alumni how their skills as A&S graduates translate to media jobs and how to approach media companies when job hunting."

Events will include structured networking time, with brief introductions of the alumni at the beginning of the evening. Students can move around the room to meet any alumni of interest.

“The alums are so passionate and excited to share about their experiences,” Moses said. “They are more than willing to offer insight and advice to confused, curious undergraduates like myself.”

The events are open to students in the College of Arts & Sciences in the classes of 2017-2020.

Space is limited and is by registration only, so students need to sign up on Handshake to reserve a spot. Email as_careers@cornell.edu for more information or to be put on the waitlist.
