Thelma Schoonmaker ’61 was nominated Jan. 13 for an Academy Award for her film editing work on Netflix movie “The Irishman,” adding to the accolades she has collected in a career-long collaboration with acclaimed director Martin Scorsese.
This marks Schoonmaker’s eighth Oscar nomination; she has won for film editing three times, for her work on “The Departed” (2006), “The Aviator” (2004) and “Raging Bull” (1980).
Schoonmaker, who studied Russian and government at Cornell, has edited more than 40 films and now shares the record for the number of both wins and nominations in the Academy Awards’ film editing category. Her nomination for “The Irishman” was one of 10 nominations the film received.
She visited Cornell in 2005 for a talk and tribute in her honor at Cornell Cinema.
The 92nd Academy Awards will be held Feb. 9 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
