Project title: Ethical and Societal Impact of AI Implementation in Healthcare for Underserved Communities

Project description: The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into healthcare systems offers transformative potential, yet raises critical ethical, psychological, and societal concerns, particularly for underserved communities. This research project investigates the nuanced impact of AI adoption on healthcare access, patient trust, and the preservation of human-centered care. Through an interdisciplinary approach combining social sciences, psychology, business, and technology, the project explores the ways in which AI can both alleviate and exacerbate healthcare disparities. Special emphasis is placed on understanding how patients in marginalized settings perceive AI interventions and how the erosion of the patient-physician relationship may impact health outcomes. Drawing on case studies, interviews with healthcare providers and patients, and analyses of philanthropic and corporate initiatives, the project will assess the balance between technological efficiency and human empathy. Collaboration with Weill Cornell Medicine and Cornell Tech will ground the study in real-world practice and innovation. The research will critically evaluate how business practices and philanthropic efforts influence the deployment of AI technologies, enabling a holistic analysis of both the promises and risks of AI in transforming care for marginalized populations. By weaving together humanitarian, technical, and business perspectives, this project aims to offer a comprehensive ethical framework for deploying AI in healthcare that promotes equity, safeguards patient autonomy, and fosters trust in medical technologies serving the most vulnerable populations.

Most important achievement: My most important accomplishment is still to come, but launching the Dynamic Equanimity 3D Printers Initiative (DE3D) during COVID-19 was especially meaningful. With one 3D printer and limited materials, I produced 5000 face shields for frontline workers. This experience reinforced my commitment to using innovation to serve others, a mindset that continues to shape my work today.

Reflections on the College Scholar Program: The College Scholar Program is what first drew me to Cornell by embodying intellectual freedom and the chance to break from traditional constraints to craft my own unique path. The program fosters a community of curious minds who challenge each other to think critically and explore deeply, inspiring me to push the boundaries of my research and expand my academic horizons. Just like the traveler in Robert Frost’s famous poem, I have always sought the road less traveled. In the College Scholar Program, I have found the perfect place to continue my journey.
