Lisa Sunde

Senior Lecturer

Overview

Lisa believes American Sign Language can be learned and enjoyed by all. As Dr. Laura Petitto said, “The human brain does not discriminate between the hands and the tongue. People discriminate, but not our biological human brain.”

American Sign Language is Lisa’s passion. It was her lifeline from an early age, growing up in a hearing family and attending oral schools. She loved this language from the first time she saw it, and now she shares her language with others, highlighting its beauty and helping students learn to use this essential communication tool to build relationships by connecting and sharing needs, joys, and experiences.

Lisa enjoys teaching Deaf Culture, ASL Linguistics, Deaf Literature, and foundational and advanced ASL classes. She has taught at Front Range Community College, the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Santa Fe Community College. At SFCC, she was the head of the ASL Program. She holds a BA in Communication Studies from Gallaudet University, and an MA in Teaching American Sign Language from the University of Northern Colorado.

Lisa also enjoys traveling and learning about different cultures, art, and languages. In the classroom, she shares stories from her life and adventures, because storytelling is essential to Deaf culture and literature.
