Overview
I am an Assistant Professor of Government at Cornell University. Prior to joining Cornell I received a B.A. from Carleton College and a Ph.D from NYU. My research primarily uses formal models to analyze the politics of non-democratic regimes. My main project to date is a series of formal models that examine why incumbent leaders-particularly autocrats-choose to hold elections and decisions surrounding elections such as whether to comply with electoral rules, commit fraud, and invite international monitors. My current projects include models of electoral violence, coups, and the relationship between new communication technology and anti-regime action like protests and revolutions.
