Overview

Hyun-ho Joo’s research and teaching interests lie in modern Korean history from a comparative East Asian perspective, the history of Sino-Korean relations, cultural interactions between China and Korea in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and modern Chinese and Korean intellectual history. Before he joined Cornell in 2024, he was a Professor at Yonsei University in South Korea. At Yonsei, he published two dozen academic articles and won the Outstanding Teaching Award twice (2012, 2014). In 2023, he was awarded The 2022 Wang Gungwu Prize by the Asian Studies Association of Australia for his paper, “Envisaging East Asia: Korean Daily Newspapers’ Interpretations of Sun Yatsen’s Pan-Asianism Speech” (Asian Studies Review 46.2 (2022)).
