A storm will hit Latin American democracies

While Latin America is realizing the cost of the COVID-19 pandemic, a storm is brewing over the region, writes Gustavo A. Flores-Macías, associate vice provost for international affairs and associate professor of government, in an op-ed in the New York Times' Spanish edition.

“While the crisis requires decisive government action to soften the blow of a very serious historical recession, the responses so far range from timorous to counterproductive,” he writes in the piece. “Without ambitious counter-cyclical fiscal and monetary policies, Latin America could face an economic catastrophe with serious consequences for its fragile democracies."
