Project title: Sustainability on the final frontier - looking into the future of climate & space policy.
Project description: As space exploration and commercial activity continue to grow, we’re starting to see that what happens in space doesn’t always stay in space. From increasing amounts of space debris to the environmental impact of rockets and re-entering satellites, our push toward the "final frontier" is leaving a footprint—both in orbit and here on Earth. This presentation takes a closer look at how space pollution, re-entry of spacecraft, and the rise of space tourism are creating new challenges that current aerospace policies aren’t fully prepared to handle. While innovation and commercialization are opening exciting opportunities, they’re also moving faster than the outdated policies and treaties meant to keep space—and our planet—safe. I’ll explore why these issues are happening, what risks they pose for the future, and how better international cooperation and updated regulations could help balance progress with sustainability. Whether it’s debris falling into oceans, black carbon emissions affecting our atmosphere, or the environmental cost of sending tourists to space, it’s clear that we need to rethink how we manage our expanding presence beyond Earth. This talk will highlight where policy gaps exist today and offer ideas on how we can protect both our planet and outer space for generations to come.

Reflections on the College Scholar Program: In the one semester I have been a part of the program, I have gained perspectives and skills that I hadn't anticipated. I am excited to see what this program will bring and believe there is so much to get out of it.
