What is your main extracurricular activity? Why is it important to you?
Being a brother of Alpha Phi Omega, Gamma Chapter, a co-educational service fraternity, is the extracurricular activity at Cornell that means the most to me. Through APO, I've had the opportunity to volunteer to teach coding concepts to first graders at Belle Sherman Elementary School. It is so rewarding to see them gain confidence and get excited about how they can make the world better through code. I'm also extremely grateful for my Cornell education and I like that I have the opportunity to share some of what I've learned with others. As director of pledging, one of my first tasks as such was to read the letters of intent from the people who participated in rush. What struck me the most was how dedicated so many Cornellians are to service. My pledges along with all the other brothers in APO have never ceased to impress me and I cannot imagine having found a better group of people to surround myself with in college.
How did any of your beliefs or interests change during your time at Cornell?
When I came to Cornell, I thought I would study some sort of science or engineering-related field because I believed such a field of study would best prepare me to make a positive impact in the world. Cornell has made me recognize that the humanities are also powerful. It is easy to see the impact engineers make because many create physical objects. However, the books that I read, the movies that I watch, and the music that I listen to all shape the way I interact with and understand others and the power to change another's perspective should not be ignored.
If you were to offer advice to an incoming first year student, what would you say?
During your time at Cornell, you will meet a lot of other Cornellians studying a wide range of subjects and participating in a wide range of extracurriculars. Realize what an awesome opportunity that is and take advantage of it. Find out what makes your fellow Cornellians passionate. Their passions may spur passions in you.
