The superior social skills of bilinguals

Katherine Kinzler, associate professor of psychology and human development, discusses her research on the advantages of bilingualism in an op-ed in The New York Times.

"Being bilingual has some obvious advantages" Kinzler writes. "Learning more than one language enables new conversations and new experiences. But in recent years, psychology researchers have demonstrated some less obvious advantages of bilingualism, too. For instance, bilingual children may enjoy certain cognitive benefits, such as improved executive function — which is critical for problem solving and other mentally demanding activities."

Kinzler's work has also been featured on NPR's "All Things Considered" and "The Brian Lehrer Show," as well as in Business Insider and numerous other media outlets.
