Dan Gaibel, LRC IT manager, dies at 45

Daniel Gaibel, information technology manager for the Language Resource Center (LRC) for 18 years, died March 30 of metastatic melanoma. He was 45.

“His love for people, cultures, technology, and music was evident in everything he did. We will miss him dearly,” said Angelika Kraemer, LRC director. She noted that according to Gaibel, "fortune favors the bold" and the glass was always full.

Gaibel was a musician and music lover who studied classical guitar as well as computer science at Ithaca College. He played in a number of local bands, most recently Tryin’ Joe & the Mad Scientist and Spacetrain. He was also a devoted fan of the band Phish, and a regular attendee at the Finger Lakes Grassroots Festival of Music and Dance. 

“Dan Gaibel was a great guy, thoughtful, kind and dedicated, and a terrific long-term IT manager. He will be sorely missed,” said Sara Bloxsom, director of human resources in the College of Arts & Sciences.

He is survived by his wife, Taiya Luce, director of Campus Information and Visitor Relations, and their son.
 
A memorial is being planned at the Foundation of Light on Sunday, April 7 from 12-2:30pm. Donations can be sent to Hospicare of Ithaca. There will also be a memorial concert in celebration of his life on Sunday, April 28 at 5 pm at The Range.
