Cornell Phi Beta Kappa

Phi Beta Kappa — Theta of New York

Class of 2012 and 2013 Inductees are listed below

Selection for membership in Phi Beta Kappa remains one of the few nationally recognized marks of scholastic attainment. It seems appropriate to bring interested Arts College faculty and students up to date concerning the procedures followed at Cornell for selection to and induction into Phi Beta Kappa. We give a short procedural timetable below:
  1. Early in the spring semester (February), the Arts and Sciences Registrar's Office and the Cornell Chapter officers will review the course grades of juniors and seniors who have completed 6 semesters.  Grades from terms with Cornell Abroad are not factored into a student's GPA for consideration into Phi Beta Kappa, although participation in this program does not make a student ineligible for membership.
  2. Selection is based on grade point average and membership is reserved only for students within the College of Arts and Sciences. Juniors whose G.P.A. falls within the top 3% of their class and only seniors whose G.P.A. falls within the top 10% of their class are eligible for membership.  A G.P.A. below 3.65 regardless of percentage ranking will not be considered for membership.  Seniors who have transferred to Cornell will be considered only after 4 complete semesters at Cornell; Juniors after 2 completed semesters.  Those transfer students not eligible as juniors may be considered for membership in their Senior year.
  3. Only Cornell grades will be considered.
  4. The Junior membership will meet with the Phi Beta Kappa president in the Spring semester following their induction to elect officers and begin plans for chapter activities for the coming academic year.
  5. After graduation, a check will be made to see if any graduating senior's eighth term brought him/her above the G.P.A. minimum set for the top 10% after 7 semesters. That senior will be elected retroactively to Phi Beta Kappa
  6. The annual induction ceremony will be held in late March/early April of each year.  There will also be a morning reception for inductees on the Saturday of Commencement weekend.

The official Phi Beta Kappa website can be found at www.pbk.org.
