Internal Transfer

Cornell students may wish to transfer from their home college to another of Cornell's colleges for many reasons. The internal transfer process requires a student to apply to the college to which they want to transfer, and each college has specific academic guidelines that internal transfer applicants must meet to be eligible for internal transfer. Regardless of the reason for internal transfer, there exists a streamlined process to aid students in identifying the target college/school and preparing themselves for transfer.

Two options exist for internal transfer: direct transfer and transfer via the Internal Transfer Division (ITD). To be eligible for direct transfer, students must have successfully completed courses in their proposed major in the target college and met certain academic criteria. Students who do not qualify for direct transfer must apply to be sponsored by the target college in ITD. Sponsorship in ITD guarantees admission to the target college if the requirements of the sponsored semester (take an approved schedule of courses and earn a specified GPA) are met.

Internal Transfer Division is a great resource for all students interested in internal transfer. Discover how they can help you by visiting their website at http://internaltransfer.cornell.edu.

Transferring From Arts & Sciences

Arts and Sciences students who wish to explore the option of internally transferring to another college/school should contact the internal transfer coordinator of the target college/school. Please stop by the front desk of 55 or 172 Goldwin Smith Hall to fill out a form to release your permanent records folder to the target college/school.

Transferring into Arts & Sciences

Cornell students who wish to internally transfer into Arts and Sciences MUST attend an internal transfer briefing to obtain an application.

The application materials for internal transfer to Arts and Sciences consist of an application sheet, a recommendation from an Arts and Sciences professor (FWS instructors can provide recommendations), a plan of study to show how all graduation requirements will be fulfilled, and a personal statement. All materials are due on the final day of classes each semester.

To graduate from Arts and Sciences, all internal transfers are required to spend four semesters on campus (Ithaca) as an Arts and Sciences student. One ITD semester can count toward the four required semesters. All internal transfers must complete 100 Arts and Sciences credits and 100 overall credits at C or above.
